Hilary Ann Duff es hija del empresario Bob Duff y de la productora cinematográfica Susan Duff. Tiene una hermana mayor llamada Haylie que forma parte del grupo musical Inventing Venus.
Hilary estudió ballet en su niñez y comenzó a actuar en producciones teatrales colegiales antes de aparecer a finales de los años 90 en series y telefilmes, como “True Woman”, “The soul collector” o “Casper meets Wendy” después de que su madre llevase a sus dos hijas a Los Ángeles con la esperanza de introducirlas en el mundo del espectáculo.
Su salto a la fama se produjo en el año 2001, cuando protagonizó la serie “Lizzie McGuire”. Ese mismo año debutó en el cine junto a Patricia Arquette y Tim Robbins en la película dirigida por Michel Gondry “Human nature”. Hilary encarnaba a Patricia Arquette de adolescente.
En el año 2003 lanzó su carrera musical con “Metamorphosis”, disco que alcanzó el número 1 en el Billboard.
Fue novia de Aarón Carter.
